From the creators of Dozens of Doughnuts comes a lively take on friendship, springtime, and counting by fives.
Opossum Topsy is preparing a “Welcome Spring!” meal for her bear friend LouAnn, who has been asleep all winter long. She’s brought milk, eggs, berries, and syrup, and soon she has five perfect pancakes, fresh from the pan. But when Topsy’s back is turned—MUNCH! MUNCH! MUNCH!—she discovers someone has eaten all of the pancakes! No problem, she’ll just make more, counting out five at a time. But then, it happens again! Who could the thief be?
Whether it’s squirrels, or crows, or someone else swiping the food, Topsy knows she doesn’t have much time left before hungry LouAnn wakes up. And it will take the help of all her animal friends to get the feast done in time. Can they make enough pancakes to feed everyone?

Reviews
“This is a fun story to read—rhythmic, rhyming text adds to the charm. Lots of young readers will enjoy guessing who has been stealing the pancakes and then looking for clues to confirm their predictions in repeated reads. The warm palette lends to the book’s cozy feel. The endpapers hold an enticing array of pancakes, making this a great addition to any library collection.” — School Library Journal, starred review
“As with this tale’s predecessor, the good-natured Dozens of Doughnuts, the fun lies in both the mischief and the food. The gentle rhyming text scans without flaw, while Farley’s delightful art brings to life not simply an evocative view of early spring, but also the fun and whimsy of a put-upon opossum. No good deed goes unpunished (and no good pancake goes uneaten) in this charming new take on post-hibernation.” — Kirkus Reviews
“The culprit(s) will be evident to children who study the detailed illustrations alongside Finison’s well-cadenced rhymed couplets. Other listeners will simply be yearning for pancakes.” — Booklist
“Quaint, rhyming couplets and quatrains give this the cozy vibe of a classic storybook, an aesthetic matched by the art in gouache and pencil. Precise strokes outline the woodland creatures’ fur while blotches of paint in natural tones effectively convey the woodsy setting; objects in the foreground—namely, the fluffy pancakes—are detailed to the point of delectability…. This would make for an excellent readaloud to celebrate the turning of the seasons, but adults be warned: a trip to the kitchen or a pancake house will be in order after the story is done.” — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books
